Eyelashes

As most of us know, our eyelashes are there to protect our eyes therefore they are taking care of our vision. I decided to do some typography with false eyelashes to see what effect i could get and wrote the word 'protect'.

Photographs

To produce photographs related to my subject was a difficult task, whilst researching photographers i came across a partially blind photographer called Craig Royal, he specialised taking photographs of light reflections in water which i found quite interesting.

I am really pleased with my outcome, i think there are some really intersting photographs here, the only problem with this is that i think it answers the textures brief instead of the photography brief. When I was researching Craig Royal he said the thing he would like to see the most is detail, this made me thing about macro photography as it is specifically focused on detail, sometimes the camera picks up detail that our eye doesn't even see. I then came across the photographer called Nick Soefje, he gave his attention to detail in his photographs and one thing he like to photograph was eyes which are appropriate for my project. I then started to take photographs of my own eye.

I tried to capture as much detail as i could , i really like the angles of the eyes. I prefered the photographs in black and white because i thought they looked more striking and had more of an impact than the coloured ones.

Visual Research

This next task was to produce a piece of reseach in a visual way. I used my research on impaired vision and presented it around the eye and the words are tangled with the eyelashes.

Textures

Here I created some textured associated with vision, at first I found this task really hard, but after research and lots of thinking I came up with some good ideas. This first set of textures were to express how our vision can be obstructed through dirty glass, mist or rain.

This second set of textures were to express blured and disorted vision, I created these by using a slow shutter speed on the camera and moving the camera in a fast motion to get these blured movement effects. I really like them and love the colours within them, I like the soft, delacate effect they have and are quite calming.

These textures were done with the use of light, I thought this was appropriate because light plays a very important part in our vision. They are done in the style of Alan Jaras, he passes light through patterned glass to get these interesting patterns, his were more colourful than mine so in the next set of textures I put them in photoshop to add colour like the colour in his photographs.

Experimental phrase

I looked at many phrases which are associated with my subject:

"Vision is the true creative rhythm"
"Red mist of anger"

"Even a blind squirrel eventually finds a nut"
"Double vision"

"Waiting for the gift of sound and vision"
"Love is blind"

"Blind date"
"Vision without a task is only a dream"

My first idea was to use the same technique i used for the experimantal word, I wanted to use it for "the red mist of anger".

The next phrase i wanted to experiment with was "even a blind squirrel eventually finds a nut" I decided to make a typface out of leaves, i thought this was appropriate as leaves are known for living in the trees and are associated with Autumn.

Experimental typography

The brief was to create my word (vision) and produce some experimental type expressing the word.

My first idea was to write the word vision with carrots becasue they are suppose to help improve our vision, i then thought of expressing it in the way that some people see text as blury unless they wear glasses to bring it into focus.

I wanted to explore fog, rain and mist whilst driving as it affects our vision. Firstly I wrote the word out and stook in in the shower, i wanted to get the effect of rain in front of it to make it less visible, as you can see in the photograph I didnt achieve the effect I wanted to create.

As this technique wasn't successful i decided to play around with the shutter speed on the camera, i then got camera shake and achieved the out of focus effect i was after. I then got the text wet and smudged the ink, ripped the paper just to see what effects i could create, here are the original photographs i took:

The photos were then put into photoshop, I played around with different effects and overlapped the different photos to create some experimental type which expressed vision.

I chose my favourite and experimented with different colours.

Proposal

For my self initiated project i have decided to focus on 'vision'. I aim to research into different types of impaired vision and look at what factors can help improve eyesight and prevent problems. I will also look into other obsticles which affect our visoin such as alcohol and drugs, also as a driver there can be things which prevent 100% vision.

Light is something which is very important to our vision as without it we would not be able to see, it effects our colour vision as well as our night vision. I would like to experiment with light to see what effects i can create.

At the end of this project i would hope to have a vast amount of research into vision which can then help me with lots of creative solutions to the brief.
